Aviation Noise & Emissions Symposium (ANE) 2025: Presentations “Realizing a 21st Century Noise Policy”, “Attributes of a 21st Century Noise Report” and “NASA’s Quesst and Advanced Air Mobility Missions – Updates and Exploring Community Engagement Strategies”– March 2025

Date: March 2025

Event: Aviation Noise & Emissions Symposium 2025

Description: Presentations by Darlene Yaplee (AICA) on “Realizing a 21st Century Noise Policy”, by Marie-Jo Fremont (Concerned Residents of Palo Alto, CA), and contributions by Darlene Yaplee (AICA) on  “Attributes of a 21st Century Noise Report”, and by Darlene Yaplee (AICA) and Jonathan Rathsam (NASA) on “Updates to the Quesst (Supersonic) and Advanced Air Mobility Missions and Community Engagement Strategies”.

1. Realizing a 21st Century Noise Policy by Darlene Yaplee (AICA)

This presentation offered the community perspective on the FAA’s ongoing Noise Policy Review and its research following the Neighborhood Environmental Survey findings. It was based primarily on the NOISE-CON June 2024 paper co-authored with Dr. Cindy Christiansen (AICA) and Marie-Jo Fremont (Concerned Residents of Palo Alto). The session was part of a double panel that included A4A, ACI-NA, and Penn State.

2. Attributes of a 21st Century Noise Report

Understanding the location and severity of aircraft noise is crucial for stakeholders, particularly airports and communities seeking effective noise reduction solutions. This presentation introduced innovative methods for reporting and visualizing community-experienced noise using non-DNL metrics. It explored historical trends, demonstrated how data visualization can inform noise mitigation strategies, and highlighted ways airport noise offices can leverage these insights to enhance community engagement and policy decisions.

3. Updates to the Quesst (Supersonic) and Advanced Air Mobility Missions and Community Engagement Strategies

NASA conducts research to benefit the public, supports regulatory agencies like the FAA, and advances aviation technology. This presentation examined how grassroots advocacy communities can engage with NASA, using the Quesst (en route supersonic noise) and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) missions as case studies. It provided insights into NASA’s research on human noise response, explored potential community concerns, and emphasized the importance of proactive dialogue. The presentation also highlighted questions and discussions to strengthen relationships between NASA and impacted communities, ensuring more effective public engagement in shaping future aviation developments.
